Electric vehicles are subject to the same rules as conventional combustion engine vehicles. For example, in order for an electric car to achieve the maximum rating, that is, five stars, in the Euro-NCAP crash test, it must protect passengers and pedestrians from the risk of injury as effectively as an internal combustion car. Euro-NCAP crash tests simulate real road traffic accidents such as head-on collisions or side impacts. The latter consists of a collision and an object moving at a speed of 50 km / h at a right angle towards the car. Sensors in the dummy located on the driver’s seat register the loads that occur, which cannot exceed the specified values. An impact to the side of the vehicle is especially dangerous because the space in which the body can deform and protect passengers (or the battery) is very small. Thus, the requirements in this area are constantly increasing, and a car that received five stars a few years ago probably would not receive them today.
From a safety standpoint, electric cars also have some advantages. For example, in them there is no risk that in a head-on collision, a heavy engine with a gearbox will be displaced into the passenger compartment, while a massive battery cover located in the floor makes the entire structure of an electric vehicle more rigid. There is also less risk of the car rolling over because its center of gravity is lower. The law sets additional requirements for electrical machines, especially when it comes to the safety of a high voltage electrical system – after an accident, the voltage in the electrical network and equipment must drop from several hundred to less than 60 volts within five seconds. This way, neither passengers nor their caregivers will be at risk of electric shock. In order for the voltage to decrease quickly, resistors are used in the respective components that cause this.
However, the battery itself cannot be discharged in this way because the amount of energy stored in it is too large. The battery is protected in various ways: a relay that disconnects the battery from the electrical system in its housing, in the event of an emergency, interrupts the connection to the electrical system and connected devices. The power supply is also interrupted by a pyrotechnic device located outside the battery. In addition, special cables, high-voltage elements increase safety – because, unlike the classic 12-volt electrical system, in which the negative pole of the battery is connected to the body, the high voltage current is supplied to the transmission devices by separate wires from the positive pole and the negative pole. In addition, the high-voltage wires are surrounded by an orange insulating layer so that they can be immediately recognized and, if necessary, quickly disconnected from the vehicle’s power supply.
